In Spain\u2019s case, its implementation directly affects the development of <strong>biomethane<\/strong> and <strong>digestate-derived fertilizers<\/strong>, sectors with a strong territorial and agricultural component. <\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<p>This article closes our series of posts by reflecting on the strategic implications for Spain in terms of <strong>market, regulation and competitiveness<\/strong>, always within the framework and content defined by the European strategy.<\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>Biomethane and digestate-fertilizer market<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">The European emphasis on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li>The valorisation of <strong>unavoidable waste<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The production of biomethane from <strong>biowaste<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The development of <strong>fertilizers derived from biowaste<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">places biomethane plants in Spain in a strategic position, especially when they integrate <strong>biorefinery<\/strong> models that combine energy production and nutrient recovery.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"> <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">The prioritisation of circularity, identified as the strategy\u2019s main objective by <strong>63% of respondents<\/strong>, strengthens the positioning of projects that manage agricultural and livestock waste and offer sustainable fertilisation solutions for agriculture.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"> <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>National regulatory fit and European harmonisation<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">The European strategy insists on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li>The harmonisation of sustainability criteria<\/li>\n<li>The development of common certification and traceability schemes<\/li>\n<li>The simplification of permits and certifications<\/li>\n<li>The use of instruments such as <strong>regulatory sandboxes<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">For Spain, this implies the need to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li>Align national regulation on biomethane and digestate-derived fertilizers with European schemes<\/li>\n<li>Integrate improved environmental assessment methodologies, including a robust <strong>CI<span style=\"font-size: 8pt\"><a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a> <\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Design more agile and predictable administrative procedures<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">This alignment would facilitate project bankability and their full integration into the European bioeconomy market.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"> <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>Competitiveness of the Spanish sector<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">From a competitiveness perspective, the new strategy offers clear guidance. Projects that: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li>Implement <strong>advanced traceability systems<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Demonstrate <strong>robust carbon performance<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Demonstrate <strong>circularity<\/strong> in the use of biowaste<\/li>\n<li>Produce <strong>advanced fertilizers<\/strong> derived from digestate with a positive impact on soil health<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">will be better positioned to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li>Access sustainable finance, especially private finance<\/li>\n<li>Participate in carbon and nature credit schemes<\/li>\n<li>Benefit from the recognition of the bioeconomy in the review of the EU Taxonomy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"> <\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<p>In conclusion, the new European Bioeconomy Strategy sets out a coherent framework that strengthens the role of biomethane and digestate-derived fertilizers as key vectors of the energy and climate transition. In addition, it is the framework on which to define the future of the countryside in Spain under the new CAP. <\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<p>For Spain, this framework represents a <strong>strategic opportunity<\/strong> to develop competitive projects aligned with circularity, sustainability and territorial cohesion, provided progress is made on regulatory harmonisation and the effective integration of European criteria.
