Our thanks to Mapfre, and especially to Antonio Huertas Mejias, its Chairman and CEO, for the commitment to innovation in the countryside and the opportunities brought by the #Bioeconomy through support for Green Gas projects such as Biomethane.

At IAM Carbonzero, we continue to work so that this vision translates into real, competitive projects that are fully aligned with Spain’s climate and rural development objectives.

We would like to share the words of its Chairman, Antonio Huertas, which emphasize this commitment and a much-needed vision of the future for a sector that feeds us and gives us life:

“I want to share that I participated in the meeting of the MAPFRE Agricultural Advisory Council. It is a valuable consultative body composed of senior executives from the leading companies in the agricultural and agri-food sector, distribution, and Spanish agricultural associations. The countryside is one of the great forgotten areas of our country.

During the pandemic, we suddenly realized its valuable contribution to the economy and society as a whole, but people tend to forget what we don’t like, and the pandemic is something we don’t want to remember. However, to paraphrase Monterroso’s famous dinosaur, when it woke up, the countryside was still there. And with it, millions of people who care for it every day because they live in or depend on those industries that, among other things, allow society as a whole to eat healthily.

As you know, at MAPFRE we care about people, including those living in what we call ‘less populated’ Spain; that is why we have more than 3,100 offices close to people, providing services, caring, and accompanying them. And that is why we have a powerful Agricultural Advisory Council in which we participate at the highest level because it is very important for MAPFRE. On this occasion, among other executives, Elena Sanz Isla Sanz, CEO of MAPFRE Spain, and myself were present.

In my speech, I reiterated what I am telling you now: for us, the countryside is very important. MAPFRE is a company that was born in the countryside nearly 100 years ago, and we have always understood that this was one of our roles as an insurer. We are the benchmark entity in the Spanish countryside. We are present insuring the risks of the entire agri-food chain which, as a whole, represents nearly 9% of the Spanish GDP and guarantees two and a half million jobs, most of them in those rural areas that, as a country, we must and need to protect.

The Spanish countryside is experiencing an incipient health crisis that could end up affecting its narrow profitability even further, and it also faces enormous concern regarding the future availability of water for its crops and the long-term planning of this essential resource.

MAPFRE, which I insist also has rural origins, will continue to care for and accompany those producers in their risks who, despite the difficulties, continue to make it possible for this country’s important primary sector to continue providing value for citizens.”
