Key Regulatory Updates on Sustainability and Carbon Footprint in Spain - RD214/2025

The Carbon Footprint, Compensation, and CO2 Absorption Registry is updated

After a four-year wait, Royal Decree 214/2025 was published last Saturday, April 12. It updates and repeals the previous RD 163/2014 concerning the registration of carbon footprints, compensation, and CO₂ absorption projects. This new regulation addresses the provisions of Law 7/2021 on climate change (Additional Provision 12) and reinforces the commitment to decarbonization in both the public and private sectors.
Among the most relevant aspects:
✅ The basic scheme of the carbon footprint registry is maintained.
✅ The obligation to calculate, plan for reduction, and publish the carbon footprint is reinforced for certain actors, especially large companies and public administrations.
✅ Companies must develop reduction plans with quantifiable 5-year targets, aligned with the 2050 climate neutrality objective.
✅ Information must be verified and publicly accessible, following a standard comparable to financial auditing.

Within this new framework, biomethane gains even greater relevance as a strategic tool for decarbonization, especially in sectors with high enthalpy processes and long-distance logistics. Its immediate availability, technological viability, and economic competitiveness position it as one of the key energy vectors for achieving climate objectives.

At IAM Carbonzero, we are committed to accelerating this green transition, developing biomethane production infrastructure in Spain that provides real and sustainable solutions to society and the productive sector.
🌱 The time to act is now. The regulatory framework is ready. The solutions are too.
