On September 25, the event organized by eldiario.es on the energy transition in Galicia took place, with the presence of Máximo Álvaro Mayordomo Ramos, Corporate and Operations Director of IAM Carbonzero. At the panel ‘Keys to an Efficient Energy Transition’, he had the opportunity to explain why biomethane is a key vector for decarbonization, the circular economy, and rural development.

Applied Circular Economy

IAM Carbonzero’s biomethane plants valorize existing waste by transforming it into:

• Biomethane: green gas, 100% compatible with the existing gas network, which is mixed with the fossil natural gas we use every day.
• Organic biofertilizer: adapted to each agricultural operation through customized agronomic studies for each environment.
• Biogenic CO₂: usable in industrial processes, closing the resource circle.

Differential Benefits

• Provides solutions to nitrate pollution, improving agricultural and livestock waste management and protecting soils and aquifers. This waste is transformed into locally produced and used biofertilizers that are rich in organic matter and nutrients of natural origin.
• Integrates the primary sector as a strategic partner, returning added value to farmers and livestock producers.
• Contributes to the digital transformation of rural areas and to EU regulatory compliance.
• Strengthens the energy independence of Galicia and Spain, reducing dependence on imported fossil gas.
• Retains population and generates stable employment in rural areas, with local-scale facilities (30–40 km operating radius).

Investment Commitment and Deployment in Galicia

IAM Carbonzero manages an investment plan of €300 million for the development of 16 biomethane plants in Spain, of which five will be located in Galicia, with a specific investment exceeding €100 million. These projects are already in advanced engineering and permitting phases.

Impact in Galicia

• Projected production: 270 GWh/year, equivalent to the gas consumption of 54,000 households (a city the size of A Coruña).
• Waste management: more than 500,000 tons annually of agricultural, livestock, and horticultural by-products.
• Emissions reduction: 270,000 tons of CO₂ equivalent annually, in addition to capturing fossil methane (28 times more polluting than CO₂).
• Employment impact: more than 200 jobs during the construction phase and more than 40 direct operational jobs, with priority for local hiring, for at least 25 years.
• Territorial regeneration by providing adapted and customized solutions for each territory.

Vision for the Future

Europe is leading the way toward decarbonization, and Galicia cannot be left behind. As our corporate director emphasized, “the future is either sustainable, or it is not”. Our biomethane plants are based on innovation and the most advanced technologies. Biomethane is an essential, mature, real, and strategic solution that combines renewable energy, circular economy, and rural development, contributing decisively to the objectives of the Galicia Energy Agenda 2030 and climate neutrality in 2040, in Galicia, in Spain as part of the EU.
